Hello, my name is Mason Mecke. I graduated from Baker University in May 2024, and I was privileged to be a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon for all 4 years of my undergraduate education. Along with being a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, I played on the men’s basketball team and served on Baker University’s Student Senate as class president. I have nothing but good things to say about Sigma Phi Epsilon and the great young men that make up the Kanas Alpha chapter at Baker University. For one, SigEp has provided me with lifelong friendships. Whether we were playing Wii baseball in the 3rd floor commons or laughing all night out by the fire pit, spending time with my brothers made up some of my fondest memories of college. I felt privileged to spend my time with such outstanding people, who constantly pushed me to grow as a student, athlete, and person.
In addition to lifelong friendships, SigEp provided me with countless opportunities to improve scholastically. As a freshman, I was especially grateful for our peer mentorship program. Immediately upon joining the house, I was matched with upperclassmen members within my major, which was Biology. My upperclassmen mentors were always there to answer my questions, assist with difficult assignments, and help study for important tests. Due to the difficulty of college courses, the transition from high school to college can be difficult for many students. My upperclassmen mentors helped make the transition much smoother and gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in the classroom.
Along with opportunities to build strong relationships and improve as a student, being a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon gave me countless opportunities to grow as a leader. During my undergraduate years, I served the chapter as Vice President of Programing and President. Being a member of the fraternity’s executive board improved my interpersonal communication, time management, and organization, all skills that have proved invaluable as I transition into the professional world. Through strong relationships with my brothers, academic mentorship, and leadership opportunities, Sigma Phi Epsilon has helped shape me into the man I am today. It’s great to be a SigEp!
